What is God?

Lets get to the point.
Lets start with the basics.
Never mind the effects.
Does God exist?
Well assuming we know what existence means lets start with basics.
What is God?

Is he nature; is he a big man with a beard; is he some form of universal conciouness; is he father son and the holy ghost, is he the laws of nature; is he the essence of good? is he something which measure our pain? Is it a concept? is it spiritual? is it phsyical? Are we god? Is it just the opposite of evil? is it everything? is it nothing? is it finite? is it infinite? Is it equilibrium?

My point is wht do we define God as?

How can we question whether something exists if we are looking for different things?

It is easy to dogmatically or cynically say God does exist or God does not exist and apply examples to attempt prove or disprove either way. But what use is this if someone sees God as a creator and others see it as timeless universal laws? Its the fundamental defintion.


If you scan the below posts people have said it depends upon what God is defined as...and some have briefl touched upon it. But this is the edge of the knife question and there needs to be more coherence?

Better still we could turn the question around and say what is not God?

honeslty, you're thinking way too into this...

God is different for every person depending on how they were brought up... i know people were god is "a savior" god is a "creator" god is a "provider" god is the name of their cat god is dog backwards... it all depends.

Why can't God have an absolute definition? Why do we limit our thinking by dumbing God down to what we want Him to be?

because thats what god is... we made god, therefore god is what we want him to be.

What if we didn't make Him?

no, once man could think for itself, it had unanswered questions so we fabricated a supreme being.

it is known in history that as knowledge increases, religion decreases and vice versa.... look at the roman empire... knowledge followed by the feudal ages.... religion.... then the renaissaunce... knowledge

right now i believe we are on a transition to a new religion age unless something is done to stop it... dark days are ahead.

ok ether how do you think god is defined.. and if you go by the common dictionary defintion.. do you know where thatmight have came from.. i mean does the bible or another source a like define god can you quote a passage from the bible for me (anyboy) that would make a description of god.. indicating some sort of defintionan... (like where does omnipotent and omniscience come from? which verses... or are those words jus what people put togethor kind of independlty from the bible?

God is defined by His actions same as everything else. The bible has many passages describing His works and He is defined through that and also through every day life as we experience it.

I just told you what I think "He is defined through that and also through every day life as we experience it." I have seen God show His power over life and death I have seen Him show great compassion. God is the all powerful being He alone holds the answers and He alone has dominion over all life.

Back to the original question what is not God?

Okay if God is omnipotent and omnisciencient then where does he not exist?

Is God capable of making a boulder so big that he cannot lift it above his head? Is God the boulder?
