All women who have ever worn a pair of high heels, know that they are not comfortable. Any woman who has spent more than an hour wearing and walking around in them, knows that high heels are painful.
Well of course it is - the human foot is shaped and designed to carry the weight of the body, with that weight properly allocated across the entire foot. Yes, we can tippy toe if we need to, but our feet are not designed to walk on our toes for more than a very brief period of time.
Wearing high heels for extensive perious of time, create many problems for ones feet, knees and can even cause back pain.
Some of the repercussions of wearing high heeled shoes include:
quote:
High-heeled shoes slant the foot forward and down while bending the toes up. The more that the feet are forced into this position, the more it may cause the Achilles tendon to shorten
...
When the foot slants forward, a much greater weight is transferred to the ball of the foot and the toes, increasing the likelihood of damage to the underlying soft tissue that supports the foot.
quote:
In many shoes, style dictates function, either compressing the toes or forcing them together, possibly resulting in blisters, corns, hammer toes, bunions (hallux valgus), Morton's neuroma, plantar fasciitis and many other medical conditions, most of which are permanent and require surgery to alleviate the pain.
quote:
High heels â€' because they tip the foot forward â€' put pressure on the lower back by making the rump push outwards, crushing the lower back vertebrae and contracting the muscles of the lower back.
quote:
A hammer toe or contracted toe is a deformity of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the second, third, or fourth toe causing it to be permanently bent, resembling a hammer.
quote:
Morton's neuroma is a benign neuroma (a growth or tumor of nerve tissue) of an intermetatarsal plantar nerve
...
This problem is characterised by pain and/or numbness, sometimes relieved by removing footwear.
quote:
Plantar fasciitis is a painful inflammatory process of the plantar fascia, the connective tissue on the sole (bottom surface) of the foot. It is often caused by overuse of the plantar fascia or arch tendon of the foot. It is a very common condition and can be difficult to treat if not looked after properly
quote:
A bunion (hallux valgus) is a deformity characterized by lateral deviation of the great toe
...
As the great toe (hallux) turns in toward the second toe (angulation) the tissues surrounding the joint may become swollen and tender.
Whilst the common sense solution to these negative health effects of high heel shoes is to stop wearing them, or wear them extremely sparingly, many women are putting aside such logic in favor of something else.. cosmetic surgery....
