Hawking thinks so based on current understanding. Thats why this question is open. Never forget the greatest minds are ultimately still feeble.

If life was based on chance (randomness) rather than fate (structure) then what would the purpose of life be? There would be none because an action left to chance has no meaning and therefore our lives (made up of meaningless actions) would serve no purpose at all.

Consider a bowling ball rolling down a bowling alley. It is pushed. Phsyics dictates its course of action but if there's a little child sitting in the next alley he can disturb that ball. Life therefore affects what we perceive as fate. If the kid is controlled by fate then we are just mortals living a predestined life. I feel in my gut this is wrong but cannot logically prove it; if I did you'd be speaking to a very potential Nobel Laurete and that would be the least of accoldaes.

But all that example tells me is that chance makes our actions meaningless. The bowler might have been playing a perfect game and then chance came and arbitrarily ruined his accomplishment. Why bother if living if chance might just decide to kill you anyway?

No the meaning is that I get to affect an event. There is meaning in that I can affect things-I exist and I have choice.

The opposite...pure fate means it does not matter whether I think something or not...that has already been decided. If I am living fate I am predestined. Therefore I have not the choice to question. Do you believe this?

Fate controls things like life and death and mainy other constant things and free will covers the rest. I never said that fate ruled all I am suggesting that fate and free will coexist

personally, I always believed that what was meant to happen is gonna happen, sometimes u can very much so affect on ur own fate, and sometimes, no matter what u do, u just cant !

You can affect fate by using free will but that doesn't make it chance.

FATE MEANS THINGS ARE SET TO HAPPEN A CERTAIN WAY, OR PREDETERMINED, IF THIS IS SO, HOW CAN FREE WILL EVEN BE? WHY WOULD ANY OF YOUR ACTIONS EVEN MATTER IF THEY COULDNT CHANGE THE WAY SOMETHING IS TO BE.

But you can alter fate to an extent because part of what fate is is a consequence or end result meaning that some action must take place first. Fate is the picture frame in which free will in drawn.

IF FATE COULD BE ALTERED OR CHANGED, THEN IT WOULDNT BE FATE ANYMORE. NOW THERE WOULD BE A "CHANCE" THINGS COULD BE DIFFERENT.

No because fate is structured and chance is not. People live and then die chance would indicate the possibility of dying then living or dying without life at all or living without death.

HOW DO YOU FIGURE?

Fate follows rules that chance does not. Chance is arbitrary and therefore it enslaves us to its control. Fate puts limits on certain things but that allows us to reach maximum potential.
