Wednesday, September 22, 2004 - Soldiers, Sgt. Kris Owen explained, don't put their lives on the line for war. They put their lives on the line "for the guy next to them, for their families, for the ideals of the country."
For that reason, soldiers and their families deserved the truth about the war in Iraq. As the presidential race winds down, what has happened in Iraq looms large for all Americans, but it really counts for apolitical military folks like Owen.
Kris Owen drove a Humvee into Iraq a few weeks after the president of the United States proclaimed "major combat" over in the Iraq war.
Owen believed that. The 24-year-old Army reservist also believed he was being deployed for six months. Owen trusted what George Bush and supporters of the invasion promised:
Despite pockets of resistance, Iraqis would embrace the people who drove a tyrannical dictator from power.
The first reality check came as Owen joined other reservists in the Fort Collins-based 244th Engineers in a scavenger hunt for scrap metal and sandbags. They needed to armor their unprotected vehicles against roadside bombs.
Did you hear about most soldiers support Bush - did you believe it, I doubt anybody asked the soldiers in Iraq. Now the truth is coming out.
A new group called Operation Truth. Hundreds of Iraqi vets tell their stories. The true stories that so far only Michael Moore has been brave enough to share.
