How do you ask and succeed in getting a payrise? |
I have been working at my current job as a Sales Person for the past 9 months. I had to take a pay cut of $15,000 as it was a new business, though was promised after every 6 months I would receive $5,000 increase to my salary. To this day nothing has happened and I do not know how to approach this. I am making money for the company, though the company is not making as much money as he wanted – though that is not my problem as he shouldn’t have hired so many of us in the first place. There are 6 in the team, and I am coming second in generating revenue. How do I approach this matter, and how do I get him to give me the increase successfully? (I do apologise if this is in the wrong area to post)

A lot of time has elapsed since you made this post so I hope you are already have your pay rise you desire. But just in case you don’t here’s the post I would have written: I suppose you could do some research on how you should go about doing this but the essence is pretty simple: ask your boss for a meeting, once in that meeting say all stuff you just said here. There isn’t much to it. Of course the temptation to procrastinate is enormous but there’s really nothing wrong with what you’re doing nor is there any special way to do it.

I still have not grown the balls to ask for a pay rise, though I have set a date for the meeting on the 04.10.2013. I have created an excel spread-sheet and I am documenting how much I make for the business so I can back up my information. In the time since I posted the previous post, I have found out that my colleagues are on $20,000+ more than me, which has made me angry. I have started not working as hard as before. Is this behaviour normal?

I’d say so. That should piss anybody off. I would use some of that anger in the meeting.

Do more than you are getting paid for. If you took a job, then you agreed that you would this, for that. You did this. They paid you that. That was the agreement. So, only by doing more can you demand a change in the agreement.

Give your employer two week notice that you got a better paying job and will be leaving. If you are as good as you say you are he will match their offer.
