Canada, Maple Syrup Heist and the Maple Syrup Blackmarket |
Quebec Canada seems to have a monopoly on the maple syrup market: it produces 75% of the global supply of maple syrup.
In a rural warehouse 160 kilometers (100 miles) northeast of Montreal, Quebec had a 'strategic reserve of maple syrup'. This is where the robbery took place. Thieves managed to siphon almost US $30.4 million dollars worth of maple syrup, and it is feared that it may be sold in the 'black market'.
