Heavens Gate Mountain - Tianmen Mountain |
About 8 kilometers out of the Chinese town of Zhangjiajie, lies the Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park. Considered holy by the locals, there is a five hundred year old Buddhist temple located in the region. The national park is home to Tianmen Mountain, commonly referred to as 'Heavens Gate Mountain' by tourists. What these tourists are referring to is actually a 131.5 meter high natural cave-hole called 'Tianmen cave'. The mountain does indeed look majestic, especially with the pathways that have been built leading up to the heavenly looking window. It takes a 7 mile hike/climb to reach Heaven's Gate. But, if that's too much physical endurance for you, you could opt for the more nerve racking mental endurance of making the journey on a cable car, which is apparently the longest cable ride.. In. The. World. The cable ride has a total length of 7,455 metres and an ascent of 1,279 metres. I think I'd choose the walk.
