In graphic design, the optic color scheme is RBG (Red, Blue and Green) which is used on the web. They are combined in various ways to produce all the colors you see on your screen. Is that what you're asking?

Actually I think it comes from color printing in general as they are basic to photography since the advent of color photography. RBG is used in printing a slide (positive) while the secondary colors cyan, magenta & yellow are used in printing from a negative (a b&w negative records black & white & shades of grey; a white hat is black in the negative & a black dress would be white (litghter) The color palette for painting has more primary & secondary colors.
