Every article I've read indicates that it is worse for women then men.

Maybe not make it go away but I think it'd definitely help progress the road of recovery.

thinking things out does help, but in the case of your friends, the one you described as thinking about it clearly, has the advantage of objectivity, he didnt love the girl, and wont miss her like his friend does. he can think clearly because he didnt get hurt, embrace the pain, but dont let it engul you.

I am being very general and stereotypical.

Girls are raised to be social creatures while guys are raised to be independat and possibly loners. And girls are raised to act passive and feel victimized, which results in much weeping after a breakup. An active person will think, "So one relationship went wrong. I'll try again." The passive person will weep for days before moving on.

Cynic that was the point that if your mind wasn't full of emotion you wouldn't care. The only reason you do care is because emotion makes you care.

i realised the slight stupidity of that comment.

but it is slightly unfair to compare the reaction of an observer to that of the person involved, as their situation is so very different.

Is it that different? Or is only different because we think it's different? I think it's possible to feel the same way in both positions.

True, but is it really worth spending time over it?

I think that it could be either painfull for either of the two. I know friends from both genders that have gone through alot of pain over break ups, and those who were like, it was no big deal.
