War of the Worlds
Review:

Short and sweet, this movie was worthless.

Nothing too cool to see, nothing much new, no characters to give more than half a shit about, and a bad presentation of a weak story.

Best acting was the little girl and Tim Robbins.

Little made sense, held purpose, or left much of an impact. Somehow still managed some natural suspense, but again with no resonance.

2.5-3 out of 10

on the contrary i thought it was pretty good. i liked the cast, and dakota fanning did wonderful, as usual. i liked how they portrayed the insignificance of humans and how we do need each other to survive. kind of made me feel like the ant under the magnifying glass.

*****SPOILERS*****

i enjoyed this movie. despite all the bad things i heard about it i saw the movie, because i see pretty much every movie anyway

so anyway, seeing humans go up in a poof of smoke was really neat, the whole idea of the aliens terra forming the land with human goo was very morbid and disturbing. the suspense was almost agonizing at times.... "dont stop you retards. theyre coming for you!" ....haha i loved it. the end was sappy and lame tho, the son should have died, shit happens.... but no, it had to be all hollywoodized and weak like that. i love morgan freemans voice. they really should have cast some nobodys instead of big namers, they did a decent job, but just about anyone could have filled those roles. except tim robbins, he made an awesome crazy dude.

for an alien flick i give it an 8/10
for an overall movie i give it 6/10

If I hadn't seen so much recent pop culture blatantly recycled it wouldn't have been so bad, still not very good, but no so bad.

The vaporizing humans with clothes raining, DBZ: Cell, absorbed the people and it rained clothes.

The Alien Walkers, Half Life 2, Its such a terrible rip off to the point where it makes almost the same noise, thats just weak.

The Aliens, Independance Day much? Oh, thats not possible, not tentacles and more legs makes it different, my bad.

And something that bugged me was a type of predictability, everything seemed choreographed. From the obvious in the form of the somewhat shoddy special effects and Toms; move here for best view of mayhem inches from sure doom with chance miss, 48.5 times. (The .5 is for being smacked with the shovel) To the rediculous, in reference to things like the reporter laying things out, playing some exclusive footage, with slow-mo any porn geek would drool over.

Everything in the nick of time and just as Tom arrives, it works once, twice for laughs and Bruce Willis kinds of bad days.

Did anyone else get the feeling they were watching a recruiting movie during the son arguing to fight scene?

I think Signs was a far better basic remake of War of the Worlds, with this new versions walkers and glam destruction making for the cliche bloated budgeted sequal that, while prettier to look at, loses out due to a shallow story.

Signs was much better as a suspense, WOTW is a great action flick. and of course there is nothing original, it is a remake after all. i viewed it as just "hey its time to kick back and watch some carnage and mayhem" and this movie succeeds in showing that

I expected more for a couple of reasons...

1. Speilberg (Actually I just hoped for more, this is actually what I was expecting from him)

2. Cruze (Dito)

3. Classic story that even holds historical significance due to how it was introduced on the radio enciting real life panic.

There was a little mayhem, but no carnage, the disappearing bodies and obscured blood sucking took care of that.

I think it would have been better if we were given more reason to like Cruze's character, instead of a lovable loser, he came off as more of a stupid dick.

I have to agree with Leftwood on this one- The movie was fair and thats about all. Indeed youd think that speilberg and cruise could pull something much better off, the film did not stink or anything but it was in no way spectacular or moving. Frightening perhaps - illogical most definetly.
I must ask - why are aliens so hell bent on killing all humans and why are they always so inept at doing so?

the film was definitely lacking anything compelling. it was a well written plot, but it was just not at all interesting.
My main thoughts were that it was just the day after tomorow with killer robots.

I can understand this to an extent, but what I recognize is Andy Dufraine when he tells that guy to go ahead, cause either way he'll bite his dick off.

This and his character in Mystic River.

the psycho guy was a bit strange, he wasnt strange enough though.

having re-read what leftwood said the recycled pop culture, mayb it was the pop culture, that recycled the original war of the worlds story. as for the alien tripods, they were supposed to be in there, its better thatn the blowtorch/frisbee half-breed that was the alien craft in the 1950s film.

For a possitive point, I'll say that one thing I really liked, and another that was almost classic Speilberg.

The almost classic moment was when the wind stopped blew the other direction, it was the strongest conveyance of natural and unifying wonder and curiosity, a halmark to any Great film maker, unfortunately it was short lived and staled quickly.

The other was the unfortunately ripped Half Life 2 moment of the walkers first appearance.

What was nice was the realistic effects, slightly grainy especially due to debri and sand or dust, it really displayed again as Decius mentioned, a muted but skilled use of effects that brought a true sense of realism, though also shortlived that image hasn't staled yet in my mind to this day, so good job on that.

Well of course, but that alone at this point in the current movie and TV trend of recycling absolutely everything is in itself a detriment to the movie.

Its not a bad thing to remake movies or ideas, but it should be special and new if possible, and if it had that affect on enough people then great, it just didn't for me.

And mainly because of those particular points of recent pop culture I mentioned. Which I'm not sure if you or anyone is very familiar with, Half Life 2 walkers and their sound, DBZ Cell (I know some of us know of the clothes raining scene here, not to mention that Cell also drained people through his tail not unlike the one scene in the movie), and surely people see the similarity of Independance day aliens with these?

So that's not just the movie or its concept being recycled, I meant that many key points seems almost carbon copied from other noticeable and even Iconic pop culture.

I really liked the movie. When I went to see it I was already aware of a lot of the critcism so that lowered my expectations which probably helped. I think the first thing you have to get to grips with is not looking at it as an alien invasion movie because there were times it felt like a bit of a let down that u weren't being shown all the huge scale carnage all over the world but there were some brilliantly handeled smaller scale moments.

The flaming train worked briliantly, the river of bodies flowing past the girl, the storm at the start. I also quite lked the Tom wasn't too likable, cool character moments when he put the baseball through the window and when he couldn't speak after seeing all those people vaporised.

I don't think u can justify saying that the tripods are stealing ideas from elsewhere, they just made them how they are in the book which was made before most of material that was referanced.

Understandable, but once you listen to the sound effects use of imagery of both referenced creations, you'll see more of what I mean.

Well, it was a pretty nice movie, but the end was just sheer lunacy. I mean puh lease, the whole movie was about how to destroy the indestructable aliens, and in the end all that you have to do is simply fire rockets at them. really stuipid. spoiled the whole film.
