Intersting word facts |
I think it would be fun and interesting to see what everybody knows about words. We might come up with some fun stuff. I've been told that the word golf was an acronym for gentlemen only ladies forbidden. But I was reading the Cambridge encyclopedia of the English Language and I read differently. Apperently golf is a scotish word that aperead in the 15th century, but its various word variant froms suggest a pronuciation that didnt even include an ( L ). The first forms of the word are: gouff, goiff, goff, gowff. Golf might have come from a Dutch word " colf"- the name of a stick or club used in hitting games of the era.
