I have been aware of this for many many years now. I usually put the lid down and then flush to avoid so much... ummm fecal matter and other dirty water particles... flying into the air and getting all over things.

On this same note, I want to puke when i see people take food into public restrooms. Ew ew ew ew ew ew....
