Well, I don't know about Islam but my understanding that Islam is directly associated to jewish Tradition in that they are decedants of Abraham. But as you have stated most religions do tend to have followers, whom are willing to go out on killing sprees based on some belief they are serving that religion.
Then look athow many are willing to go out on some killing spree in the name of democracy, supposedly the individuals right of choice? Of course ya may be right about the slave thing, After all the Native American population turned out to make very poor slaves so they had to inport them. (besides the indentured servants from europe)

It's name is Ideology and, its responsible for the deaths of millions.

Religion, Racism, Politics, Nationalism, Democracy... all ideologies.

And by the way, Islam its much younger than christianism, and as Wayback just said they relate themselves to the jews, Isaac and Abraham.

Islam is interesting, its a combination of Judaism and Christianity, the sunnah or hadiths make up the bulk of the muslim religion not the quran as the quran is general and explains what appears from the sunnah, for example the quran may say beat your wives but the sunnah says a light beat. Stories, situations are explained in the sunnah.

Christianity atleast most non-catholic, eastern , early protestant, is considered with more inner or spiritual aspects, there are less hard rules, and most folks try to make or suggest hard rules which is why you have various different domination, debates, etc

What a right-wing says and left-wing says may or may not be true but because they are no polar opposites in religion its hard to label, a fundamentalist islam can be strict but be liberal on certain comments for instance strict about fighting enemies, not touching women or interacting, and praying but not so strict about pictures, unmarried ladies,etc

Similar, a devout christian may criticize a devout catholic for relying to much on superstition and religion even though the he/she is devout.
