Having had to wear a uniform throughout my school time, I can honestly say it never bothered me. I would say that it does give kids one less thing to pick on each other about, because there is no difference in the way rich and poor kids are dressed. as for parents being able to afford the clothes, uniforms at state schools in britain are generally not that expensive, or the bits that are such as a blazer will last for a good few years. The other thing is when the kids are younger, it just means that the parents don't have to buy yhem as many sets of clothes to wear outside of school as most of their time is spent in the school uniform. I suppose uniforms to prevent students from expresiing their individuality through the way they dress, but they still have their choice of hair style etc. And as previous posters have said individuality is expressed in other ways than clothing, after the first month or so of term you could usually pick out the various social groups through other means rather than just looking at their clothing. Which also means everyone gets to start without having their character judged from what they are wearing., and there is a chance that people may actually talk to each other rather than just avoiding someone on principal, even though they dont actually know the particulars.
